"Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." Hebrews 12: 1-2 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Matthew 6:33 "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." --> This statement if first of all a promise. It is a mission and a promised reward. The context of this passage deals with worrying. Jesus is commanding the disciples (& us) not to worry about "your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear" (Matt. 6:25). Jesus says if we are faithful to pursue Him first and foremost in our lives, to make His goals our goals and His righteousness our righteousness, than all else will fall into place. This, if you think about it, is the easiest and least stressful way to live, and yet, we cannot seem to get it right. We cannot walk it out. Why can't we? What is in me that is so adverse to seeking Him? I guess it is my flesh. Christ said, "'If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up His cross daily.'" (Luke 9:23). In our culture today, the last thing we are taught is to deny ourselves. The world teaches just the opposite?self-indulgence, no matter how perverse, detrimental, or costly. This is no excuse, however. For God commands that we "not be conformed to this world" (Romans12:2). Though it is difficult for us, God promises "My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9). Therefore, I will continue to follow His command, with His help, to seek first and foremost His kingdom and His righteousness. (01/15/00)
